Supernatural Detectives That We Can’t Help but Love

Supernatural detectives are always fascinating because they show us a different kind of persona from the typical trope of badass male or female characters.

Count S. A. Olson, author of the Black Shadow Book Series, has his own interesting character of an occult detective. Jason Black is a demon who works as a detective who hunts down humans who can be compared to monsters because of the things they do. He has developed quite a nasty reputation for seeking justice for victims.

Today, we’ll be taking a look at some occult detectives who can solve our problems but might just be too dangerous to hire.

John Constantine From Hellblazer

John Constantine truly doesn’t want to assist you with your enigmatic issue because doing so will likely result in your death. But then again, you’ll most likely perish if he doesn’t. He must, therefore, try. But he’d prefer not to.

It’s a never-ending cycle for a paranormal detective, and his somewhat humanitarian viewpoint balances out his less-than-honorable methods. Although Constantine isn’t a particularly nice person, he does think that humanity has a right to be what it is and that most people are generally good. In addition to his propensity to get involved when he shouldn’t, he simply has the worst luck.

This is repeatedly demonstrated to us as Constantine loses loved ones and yet returns whenever he smells a hint of brimstone. It’s an unhealthy habit he finds difficult to break.

Dirk Gently From Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency

Special mention goes to Dirk Gently, who vehemently denies the existence of the paranormal. Even though he believes the entire situation is a sophisticated scam, amazing things continue to occur around him. This makes him reluctant in his own cynical manner.

Jason Black From the Black Shadow Book Series

Sometimes, it takes an actual demon to bring justice to the victims of supernatural atrocities done by hideous humans.

Three tales featuring Half-Daemon investigator Jason Black live up to his ill-reputed reputation of rescuing victims from monsters who aren’t too unlike you and me.

Being one of the supernatural detectives in this list and one from the Black Shadow Book Series, Jason has quite some grit. He’s certainly one of the supernatural detectives we love to drag into trouble.

Harry Dresden From The Dresden Files

It’s possible that Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden got his name from three stage magicians. However, his best trick is traversing the mundane Chicago and the otherworldly realms that lie just out of human reach. Unfortunately, he gets dragged into every paranormal drama, from the Red Court’s vampires (who end up kidnapping his girlfriend) to werewolves gone feral.

No matter the case, Harry accepts any task, no matter how dire it seems.

Jessica Jones from Alias, Jessica Jones

Jessica exclusively deals with the paranormal insofar as magical and supernatural aspects are frequently interwoven in superhero settings. In the comics, she also only works as an investigator for a brief period of time (although her present TV show is primarily focused on that part thus far).

However, Jessica’s persona embodies every trait of a sulky private eye. She is caustic, direct, and no-nonsense. Beneath her rough look, she’s a romantic at heart. One cannot overstate how much she loved Wild Turkey in her television incarnation.

Jessica might not constantly be the hero she desires to be, but she is unquestionably the hero we need, whether she is a reporter, detective, or superperson.

John Persons From Hammers on Bone

The enduring gumshoe is John Persons, the private eye at the sinister core of Cassandra Khaw’s fantasy noir. He has the attire, the vernacular, and the quick wit to get right to the point of a case.

However, the being occupying Persons’ human form for thousands of years is aware of this and understands better than to become involved in cases that aren’t worthwhile. That is, when he reaches eleven-year-old urges him to murder his stepfather “because he’s a monster” and places a piggy bank on his desk.
